Promoting Women in Architecture

This workshop investigates the barriers to, and the strategies/good practice for, promoting career development for women in architecture.

Book your spot here!

Less than 5% of senior level positions in UK architectural practices are occupied by women. Yet, the number of women studying architecture increases annually; in 2022 more than 50% of incoming students were women. Statistics also indicate that many women leave architecture between the age of 30 and 40.

This workshop is organised and sponsored by the architectural courses at the University of Salford and in collaboration with London South Bank University (LSBU), the Women in Architecture (WIA) group and the Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI)-group of the RIBA NW.

In this half-day event we investigate barriers towards women being promoted in architectural practices and discusses strategies as well as good practice to showcase ways towards promotion and career development for women in architecture.

The goal of the event is to share experiences, understand and reflect on good practices, establish networks of support, mentorship and establish – with the help of a coach – resilient practices and mindset towards approaching promotion activities (writing paperwork, interviews etc.)

The event commences after an introduction by Prof Igea Troiani, Head of Division of Architecture at LSBU.

For the main part of the event attendees will reflect, share experiences and discuss ways of sharing good practice. Coached by foreign-qualified architect and coach Ishwariya Rajamohan attendees will discuss experiences with promotion practices in small groups.

The event will close with a presentation of outcomes of these group discussions and a preliminary summary by Dr Tanja Poppelreuter, Associate Professor in Architectural Humanities and Dr Laura Coucill, Head of Architecture, University of Salford.
